Title/Position: Publishing Intern

Full Time, 3 months, $15 per hour

 

Crooked Lane Books / Alcove Press is looking for a creative, ambitious, and versatile intern to join our team. This is a unique, ground floor opportunity with immediate chances for learning and growth. It will challenge anyone whose interests combine marketing and production responsibilities. Duties include assisting in the production, marketing, publicity and sales of all titles, administrative work, occasional evaluation of submissions, and attendance at in-house meetings.

 

This is a high-level internship which hits the ground running and is ideal for candidates who are familiar with the publishing industry, good at managing their time, and are ready to absorb new information and apply it to high-stakes tasks. The entire Crooked Lane and Alcove team works together closely, so this position is a good fit for someone who wants to understand the entire publication process and how different departments fit together. Essential job responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the marketing process
    • Researching influencers and blurbers
    • Identifying comp titles
    • Social media outreach
    • Asset creation (graphics, reading guides, etc)
    • Edelweiss and NetGalley management
    • Research for marketing projects
    • Drafting sales and marketing copy and materials for sales, key accounts, and consumers, including but not exclusive to catalog copy, galley copy, and flap copy
  • Supporting the production process
    • Communicating with authors on needed materials and information
    • Submitting books to national awards
    • Creating transmittal files for book jackets
    • Tracking contract and agreement data
    • Creating and maintaining spreadsheets, reports, and files of vital information
    • Contributing to cover design discussions
  • Occasionally read, comment on, and route submissions from agents and authors
  • General office and administrative work
  • Conduct special research projects as they arise, including comparable title and sales analysis

 

The ideal candidate would:

  • Have a B.A. or B.S.
  • Have had at least 1-2 applicable internships at publishing houses or agencies
  • Love spreadsheets, numbers, and administrative tasks
  • Be an independent, out-of-the-box researcher who can take a research question and produce thoughtful data and information
  • Must be an organized and detail-oriented entrepreneur who is able to work on projects that require a diverse skill set
  • Have rigorous analytical thinking as well as the ability to monitor and support multiple projects simultaneously
  • Be passionate not only about books but the processes that deliver them to readers
  • Be ready to take independent responsibility for projects immediately
  • Be poised for rapid professional growth  
  • An interest in mysteries and book club fiction is a plus
